January 2004 : Maui |
Arrive in Maui after leaving Hawaii. Collected my new hire car, a Toyota Echo and navigated myself successfully to my new hotel.
The weather in Maui was atrocious! The palm trees were bent double like pictures I have seen on the TV when they show hurricanes and the sky was black! I drove to the far side of the island for a free breakfast and some general tourist info and was advised to get back to my side of the island in case they decided to close the coast road due to the adverse weather conditions! Went to Iao State Valley Park to see the Iao needle before heading off to do some shopping at Walmart. As I was leaving the store the lady by the door said "Don't forget your umbrella" and handed me one - how neat is that? Can't image anything like that in the UK! Then again, we don't get rain like that in the UK. I had to paddle through 2-3 inches of water in the car park when I got back to the hotel in order to get into the building! Amazing how quickly the weather can change. The car park was almost dry the following morning. I bought myself a cassette type which came with the hire of a player and set off to drive the "Road to Hana". The road is famous for 600 turns and 54 one way bridges. It took me most of the day to drive there, including numerous stops off along the way. I started at 9am and arrived at the end of the road at 4pm. Fortunately the drive back didn't take quite as long, but it was still about 2 hours. Drove to the summit of Haleakala Caldera. 10,023 feet above sea level and very impressive. The drive claims to be one of the shortest going to a high elevation. Advice suggests you take your time because of this (don't want to get "the bends" after all). Had an explore of Lahaina before going to a lu'au which I won a ticket for. Typical that the lu'au with the unlimited free drinks is located on the other side of the island to where I am staying, a 45 minute drive, so I had to be sensible in order to drive back... Another island visited, and time to leave Maui and catch my next inter-island flight to my final island of Kauai. |
