February 2003 : Canberra
I left Syndey on 13th February and caught the Oz Experience bus to Canberra. Did a few stops en-route encluding visiting quite an impressive blow hole at Kiama.

Spent an amazing week in Canberra - so much to see and do with so little time. When I first told people I was spending a week in Canberra the response I got was "What on earth are you going to do in Canberra for a week?". I can only assume that these people have never taken the time to visit the capital city!!!

Captain Cook Memorial Jet - every day between certain hours they activate this fountain. The amount of water it squirts into the air is unbelievable, but still pretty pointless I thought...

The National Carillon - holds 57 bells ranging in size from a few kilograms to a few tonnes! Again I didn't go inside - I just listened to the chiming from beside the lake.

The Australian War Memorial - a huge museum inside. They have all about the various conflicts in which Australia has taken part as well as housing various aeroplanes, memorobilia and even a Japanese mini sub which attacked the harbour in Sydney. The weather forecast was pretty hot -but it didn't hold me back from exploring.

Blundells cottage - a quaint little cottage from the late 1800's. I didn't bother going in, but chose to admire it from the outside instead!

Parliament house - only came into use in 1988. The flagpole on the roof cost millions of dollars, and the flag flying on it is the size of a double decker bus - pretty big!

Anzac Parade - along the edges are monuments to the major conflicts in which Australia has taken part. The saddest part is that they have left a number of empty spaces for "future conflicts".

Black Mountain houses a weird looking structure called the "Telstra Tower" (Telstra is the main phone company in Australia). From the top is an amazing view of Canberra and Lake Burley-Griffin named after the man who designed the city (a competition was held to design the 'new' capital city and Burley-Griffin won!)

But... I guess the highlight of my time in Canberra had to be meeting my penfriend Susana who I've been writing to for over 13 years! Of course I met her husband Chris and her baby Delia as well, and was made most welcome at their home when I was invited over for a delicious roast lamb dinner.

A week after I arrivedit was time to leave Canberra. I spent a night at a place called Gelantipy where I had a go on the climbing wall and also went out spotlighting where we managed to spot some wombats and a possum as well as some kangaroos and some wallabies.
