June 2003 : Alice Springs & Uluru | |
The Ghan - the train which runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs (soon to be extended to Darwin). The journey takes 19 hours overnight. Originally the trip was done by the Afghans (hence the name the Ghan) with camels instead of a train. Anzac Hill - provided a great view over the township of Alice Springs (formerly Stuart Town). |

Rainbow Valley - was down a 4x4 sidetrack off the main Stuart Highway. We unhooked the trailer on the minibus and rode out the bumps to eventually be greeted by a spectacular view and a pleasant walk. |

Watarrka - is usually known by its English name of Kings Canyon. We arrived there in plenty of time to start a walk before sunrise and complete it after the sun was up. The rock is layered in strips, and has been eroded away into dome like structures. |

Mount Conner - is often mistaken for Uluru on first sighting, and from a distance it is equally as impressive. |

Uluru - probably better known by its English name of Ayers Rock is the worlds largest monolith. An incredible sight looming out of the ground from a distance. It was amazing to watch the colours change as the sun began to set. |

Uluru at Sunset |
Uluru at sunrise - another awesome sight, watching the rock change colour as the sun came up, especially the bright orange glow. This was followed by a walk around the base which took in some amazing features on the rock as well as passing some sacred aboriginal sites. This was followed further by climing to thr top for some spectacular views of Mount Conner and Kata-Tjuta. |

Kata-Tjuta - otherwise known as the Olgas means 'many head' in the aboriginal language. We went for a four and a half hour hike through the 'Valley of the Winds' |

Telegraph Station - at the original Alice Springs. The original town was located 3km north of what was Stuart Town. In recent years Stuart Town was renamed and is now known as Alice Springs. The telegraph station remains on its original site. Morse code was used to send messages along the telegraph. |
